Workshop on Peatland Fire Prediction and Warning in the ASEAN Region

The Workshop on ASEAN Peatland Fire Prediction and Warning was held in Kuala Lumpur on 13-14th July 2010. It was organised to support the implementation of the ASEAN Peatland Management Strategy 2006-2020 as part of the ASEAN Peatland Forests Project (APFP) supported by the International Fund For Agriculture Development (IFAD) and The Global Environment Facility (GEF). It was organised by the ASEAN Secretariat and the Global Environment Centre (as Regional Project Executing Agency) and was held in association with the Government of Malaysia through the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment (NRE), the Forest Department of Peninsular Malaysia and the Selangor Forest Department.

Technical Meeting for the Development of the ASEAN Peatland Fire Prediction and Warning System (June 2010)

The meeting was held on 10 June 2010 as a follow-up to the workshop on Development of the ASEAN Peatland Fire Prediction and Monitoring System which was held in Singapore in February 2008 and was supported by the ASEAN–Australia Development Cooperation Program (AADCP). The focus of this meeting was to initiate preliminary actions for the development of a workable system for fire prediction and provide early warnings as a means of fire prevention particularly for peatlands in Southeast Asia, with preparations for implementing pilot activities at the North Selangor Peat Swamp Forest in Malaysia.

International Meeting on Integrated Management and Rehabilitation of Tropical Peatlands (2009)

The Meeting was held on 26 November, 2009 and provided a platform to highlight the importance of peatlands for climate change and biodiversity and share experiences and lessons learnt in relation to rehabilitation and sustainable use of peatlands. The meeting was jointly organized by the ASEAN Secretariat and the Global Environment Centre (GEC) as an activity supported by the ASEAN Centre For Biodiversity (ACB) and the IFAD/GEF Project on Rehabilitation and Sustainable Use of Peatland Forests in South East Asia.

Minimizing Impacts of Palm Oil and Biofuel Production in SE Asia on Peatlands, Biodiversity and Climate Change (2007)

The Workshop was held on 31 October – 1 November 2007 in Kuala Lumpur. It was organized by the Global Environment Centre, Wetlands International, Global Carbon Project, BP and the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity with support from the Asia Pacific Network on Global Change Research (APN). It was held in association with the Malaysian Palm Oil Association (MPOA). It was attended by more than 40 experts on peatland, climate change, oil palm and biofuel from seven countries.

Workshop on Vulnerability of Carbon Pools of Tropical Peatlands in Asia (2006)

Sixty-one participants from 10 different countries attended an international workshop on the vulnerability of Asian tropical peatlands in Pekanbaru, Riau (Sumatra) on 24 – 26 January 2006. This workshop was organized by Global Environmental Centre (GEC, Kuala Lumpur), Global Carbon Project (GCP, Canberra) and CIFOR. Tropical peatland ecosystems are important terrestrial carbon pools facing tremendous pressure leading to large amount of carbon emissions and at the same time vulnerable to the changing climate.

International Workshop on Integrated Management and Rehabilitation of Peatlands (2004)

The Workshop on Integrated Management and Rehabilitation of peatlands was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 6-7 February 2004. The workshop was jointly organized by the Global Environment Centre and Wetlands International with support from UNEP/GEF, UNDP-GEF, DANIDA and CIDA-CCFPI. It was attended by more than 100 technical experts and representatives from a broad range of government agencies from 14 countries around the world. A total of 25 papers were presented in this two days workshop.

Workshop on Fire Prevention and Control in Peatlands (2002)

The Workshop on Prevention and Control of Fire in Peatlands was held from 19th to 21st of March 2002 and attended by almost 70 representatives from Federal and State agencies, NGOs and research institutions in Malaysia, and regional representatives from ARCBC, Wetlands International Indonesia Programme and Alterra. This Workshop brought about together concerned parties to discuss issues relating to the importance and vulnerability of peat swamp forest in Malaysia.
