REDD+ Corner

Welcome to our first edition of the newly revised REDD+ Corner. As we move from REDD+ readiness toward implementation we look at some of the challenges ahead; in particular around integrating emissions into land use planning and financing for REDD+. We also share some of our early experiences on trialling Participatory Forest Monitoring; we delve deeper into the area of REDD+ and Agriculture and our new REAP Program; as well as feedback on what happened in Doha and what it means for REDD+.
Enjoy reading!

From REDD+ readiness to implementation; thinking ahead
REDD+ is facing many challenges, not least the slow and uncertain rate of progress in reducing actual greenhouse gas emissions from the forestry sector. For many of us with experience working in this sector, these difficulties are not unexpected. Read more...
SNV launches new programme:
The REDD+ Energy and Agriculture Programme
Agriculture and energy use are major drivers of deforestation and forest degradation. In order to tackle these drivers requires the introduction of improved agricultural practices and appropriate renewable energy technologies. SNV will begin the REDD+ Energy and Agriculture Programme (REAP) in January 2013 toadvance understanding on the interface between agriculture and energy use across different forest landscapes and to introduce contextualised solutions in order to bring about reduced emissions, forest protection and improved livelihoods. Read more...
LEAF training on GIS in Nghe An Province
The USAID-funded Lowering Emissions in Asia’s Forests (LEAF) program, of which SNV is an implementing partner, held a 3-day technical training in October for 16 foresters on Geographic Information Sensing (GIS) and Remote Sensing in Nghe An Province, Vietnam. REDD+ is a very new concept in Nghe An, and LEAF is the first project to deliver this type of technical support. Read more...
REDD and Doha Gateway:
An Expectation Gap
After an anticipated delay at the UN climate talks in Doha, Abdullah bin Hamad Al-Attiyah, President of COP18, took less than a minute to hammer through a series of ‘decisions’. He then declared the creation of the ‘Doha Gateway’. Read more...
Experience from the Field: Agriculture
Agriculture is the main driver of deforestration. A key challenge for the success of REDD+ is how to develop and introduce approaches that can satisfy the demand for agricultural products and maintain the livelihoods of the many individuals that depend on agriculture, in a manner that does not require the clearing of forests. Read more...
Experience from the Field:
Participatory Forest Monitoring
The SNV Participatory Forest Monitoring pilot includes PCM (Carbon), PBM (Biodiversity) and PSM (Social). As a pilot activity developed by Lam Dong DARD, with support from ICI BMU’s, VNFOREST-SNV’s HB REDD+ project the pilot’s duration is from August 2012 until June 2013. Read more...
