Restoration and conservation contribute to nature-based solutions

Madrid - Fewer than a dozen countries have so far included peatlands in their Nationally Determined Contributions, although the carbon-rich ecosystems exist in 180 countries, according to an international expert speaking on the sidelines of the U.N. climate talks in Madrid.

On the first day of COP25 in Madrid, Spain, JICA together with Greifswald Mire Centre, Global Environment Centre (GEC), UN Environment Programme and FAO organized the COP25 official side event for promoting proper management of peatlands. Read more
 

Helping countries better monitor and report on forest and land-use under the Paris Climate Agreement
A new FAO/GEF project will directly benefit 26 targeted countries across Asia, Africa, and Latin America and more broadly some 185 countries and territories that are part of the global network of National Correspondents for the Global Forest Resources Assessment. Photo: PeterBatarseh/Shutterstock. 
The FAO recently launched a new $7.1 million GEF-supported project to make forest data more accessible, transparent and available. It is one of only four global projects approved under the GEF's Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT) - a new trust fund aimed at supporting countries' implementation of the Paris Agreement. IFAD together with ASEAN invests in the reduction of transboundary haze pollution in Southeast Asia
IFAD is granting US$ 3.5 million to ASEAN towards financing the programme. The ASEAN Secretariat, the Center for International Forestry Research, and the Global Environment Centre will jointly implement the regional programme. The programme is a follow-up to the GEF4-IFAD ASEAN Peatland Forests Project 2009-2014, and aims to support ASEAN Member States to achieve the goals of the ASEAN Peatland Management Strategy, the key targets of the ASEAN Programme on Sustainable Management of Peatland Ecosystems, and support the implementation of the ASEAN Haze-Free Roadmap. Read more
