REVIEW OF REGIONAL HAZE SITUATION IN ASEAN REGION FOR DECEMBER 2020  
 
In December 2020, ASMC has issued an advisory alert for dry season in Northern ASEAN region by the increasing number of hotspot. Based on surveillance by the NOAA-20, a total of 3053 hotspots with high confidence level were detected in ASEAN region where 98% were detected in Northern ASEAN region. Smoke haze was observed to emanate from some of these hotspots in Cambodia, Myanmar and Thailand.

WMO Provisional Report on the State of the Global Climate in 2020 
2020 on track to be one of three warmest years on record

According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the year 2020 ended as one of the warmest years on record despite the world's lockdown.  “2020 has, unfortunately, been yet another extraordinary year for our climate. We saw new extreme temperatures on land, sea and especially in the Arctic,” said WMO Secretary-General Prof. Petteri Taalas.

2020 warmest year on record for Europe; globally, 2020 ties with 2016 for warmest year recorded

The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) reported that year 2020 was the warmest ever registered and next four warmest years for Europe also happened during the last decade. Meanwhile globally, the year 2020 was on par with year 2016 for surface air temperature and alarmingly around 1.25°C above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial period.

World set for 3C warming by 2100 despite pandemic and pledges: UN

The UN’s Environment Programme revealed that the Earth is still on course to getting warmer at 3°C by end of the century. Experts fear of inevitable increase in carbon emissions in 2021; last week the UN said that countries planned to increase fossil fuel production by 2 percent each year this decade.

Japan to lay out 'green' growth strategy to meet Suga's net-zero emissions goal -Nikkei

The strategy will serve as an action plan to achieve Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's pledge to slash carbon emissions to zero on a net basis in 2050 including replacing gasoline-powered vehicles with electric cars and installing up to 45 gigawatts of offshore wind power.

Sarawak lowers Co2 emissions by 77%

Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) Power announced during SEB’s Business Update 2020 virtual session that Sarawak, Malaysia has managed to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 77 percent since 2010 by building hydropower plants. The generation mix was predominantly from thermal power plants which utilised coal and gas.

Less than five percent of Finland's energy comes from peat contributing about 14% of Finland's entire greenhouse gas emissions. Lawmakers' efforts to phase out peat for burning have stoked resentment between green-leaning urban populations and the rural communities where the industry supports up to 12,000 jobs.

They are in the forefront to be an international authority for peat and peatland research, according to MPS President, Dr Lulie Melling.

Palm oil prices to keep rising in first half of 2021 on tight supply — CPOPC

Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries (CPOPC) has published Palm Oil Supply and Demand Outlook Report 2021 the Council’s prognosis of the supply and demand dynamics for the upcoming year. CPOPC stated palm oil prices will continue to rise in the first half of 2021 as global supply squeezed by a La Nina weather pattern is set to remain tight.

94% MPSO certification for palm oil industry in Sarawak

Sarawak Oil Palm Plantation Owners Association (Soppoa) through its press release announced that the Sarawak palm oil industry has been able to achieve 94 percent Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil Certification (MPSO). Soppoa generated an income of RM8.9 billion last year from its total production of 4.24 million metric tonnes of crude palm oil despite the global economic downturn.
