Peat Related Professional Experience/History: | I had to go to the University of the Philippines Los Baños for my PhD to come across the existence of Caimpugan peatland and eventually realize its ecological importance. The serendipitous instance that lead me to studying Caimpugan Peatland was in the year 2008 while I was doing an Indicative Conservation Plan for the Agusan Marsh, which concluded Caimpugan peatland as top priority conservation site in the marshland. Inspired by the support of Dr. Susan Page who has been working with Indonesian peatlands, I wrote a proposal for my dissertation entitled Carbon Storage of the Caimpugan Peatland in Agusan Marsh, Philippines and its Role in Greenhouse Gas Mitigation. My advisory committee from UPLB was supportive to the proposal since it was a pioneer study on C storage of a peatland in the Philippines. As I went on with my field and laboratory sampling, I have met officials from both government and non-government offices that are also involved in the conservation of Caimpugan peatland. The training workshop on peatland assessment and management with resource persons Dr. Jonathan Davies and David Lee together with PAWB officials has allowed me to be a part of the peatland conservation initiatives in the country. |
