As a follow up of International Indonesia Peatland Conversation (IIPC), ICCC has organized a series of Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on 22-25 April 2013. The topics of those FGDs are Incentives and Disincentives in Peatland, Green House Gas (GHG) Inventory in Peatland, Spatial Planning in Peatland, and One Map Initiative of Peatland.  Keynote Speakers from Ministries, Agencies and Universities have contributed in sharing up to date information based on their experiences on the topics mentioned above. Participants from Ministries, Agencies, Universities, NGOs, and International NGOs have contributed their idea and comments which resulted positive inputs for the next step activities towards Sustainable Peatland Management.

As a productive discussion in the FGDs, four main topics were discussed, which all are purposed for Sustainable Peatland Management in Indonesia. The FGDs identified the issues and opportunities to be further explored and considered in order to support the GHGs emission reduction from peatland.

Those FGDs suggested that there is a significant need of commitment from all stakeholders, government (ministries and agencies), private sector, and peatland technical experts, as well as the communities to increase their awareness on the importance of peatland. Besides, there are many issues should be further considered and followed up with in-depth discussion on:

  1. What is the purpose of the implementation of incentives and disincentives in peatland; Who will be beneficiary from the incentives and disincentives in Peatland?; What is the criteria and indicators; How to identify the emission source and type; What kind of incentives and disincentives which should be developed?
  2. What is the GHGs emission factors?; What is the most appropriate methodology for the measurement?; What is the methodology for monitoring?; The importance in measuring the dynamics
  3. The importance to coordinate among the Ministries in formulating the Sustainable Peatland Management; and
  4. The importance in developing guidelines based of science for all activities in peatland, including peatland mapping; The importance of developing peatland map as an ecosystem.

Amongst the priorities need to be taken for Sustainable Peatland Management in Indonesia, ICCC will synthesize the key action points by facilitating expert panel meeting based on the FGDs results mentioned above.
