CHESAPEAKE - A brush fire kept firefighters busy Tuesday behind the Riverwalk area off Great Bridge Boulevard.

The blaze, off Marsh Island Drive, involved about an acre near the water behind the development, said Ted Ambrose, a Fire Department spokesman. No homes were threatened but smoldering peat caused flare-ups twice since the blaze began Sunday, Ambrose said.

The Fire Department's brush truck could not reach the area because a trail through some woods to the site is too narrow, Ambrose said. An all-terrain vehicle was used to haul hoses through the woods to get to the blaze.

About 75 firefighters have spent a total of 40 hours battling the fire since Sunday, Ambrose said.

The first firefighters who arrived Sunday saw children trying to put out the blaze, Ambrose said. Arson investigators have identified suspects and the blaze is under investigation.
