MORE than 35 firefighters are still tackling a moorland fire in Stalybridge nearly a week after it broke out.

The blaze has spread underground in the peat layer but has been contained and does not pose any risk to people living nearby.

The heat and terrain have made it difficult for firefighters to extinguish the fire.

A helicopter has also made trips to Walker Wood reservoir, Derbyshire, to pick up water and drop it on the hillside.

Tony Hunter, from Greater Manchester Fire Service, said: "It has been burning since last Wednesday and we are staying on top of the situation.

"Because it is the peat underground that is still burning, the only way we can put it out is to get a digger up there or hope for rain."
