The cutting of peat threatens birds living in peatland habitats in southern Finland, the Finnish Association of Nature Conservation (SLL) warned on Friday, adding that for example the willow grouse had already disappeared in most parts of the Pirkanmaa region.
Large turbaries shatter habitats and punch wholes in the distribution of the willow grouse, the SLL said.
Bogs in southern Finland must be protected and restored to their original state more efficiently than currently, the organisation added.
Peat is primarily used for power and heat generation in Finland.
