A scrub fire in the Far North has destroyed 20 hectares of swamp and farm land, but it could have been worse.

The blaze which ripped through the Kaimaumau swamp, north of Kaitaia is thought to have been deliberately lit.

Principal Rural Fire Officer for the area Kevin Ihaka says the fire is contained but it could take a while to completely extinguish, particularly if the peat is ignited. He says the fire burned through the swamp and onto farmland destroying some fences and farm assets. No major buildings were damaged.

Mr Ihaka says the area is very dry but the biggest problem yesterday was the wind, which fanned the flames. Ground crews have been scaled down and heavy machinery has been brought in.
