Description: Short report on today's situation on fire and haze

According to today's NOAA satellite imagery, few hotspots still persist in Sumatra, Indonesia, due to the current dry weather. A total of 70 hotspots were detected on the island of Indonesia (circled in top picture), with on-going fires in the area contributing to the current haze situation. Southeasterly to southwesterly winds still prevail according to the Natural Environment Agency, Singapore. As such, the combination of fire and haze from Sumatra and the wind direction is blowing the haze from Sumatra towards Peninsular Malaysia (circled in bottom picture).

The haze in parts of Peninsular Malysia has visually worsened today due to haze from Sumatra combined with that originating from local fires. The resultant haze has lowered visibility and negatively impacted the public's health further, particularly respiratory problems and coughing.

To reduce these symptoms, below are some recommendations from the Health Ministry, Malaysia:

  1. Limit outdoor activities, if possible
  2. Avoid dehydration - drink plenty of water; don't wait until thirsty (2 to 4 glasses per hour for days of vigorous activity and at least 8 glasses on other days)
  3. If you exercise or sweat a lot, take isotonic drinks to replenish your body's salt and minerals
  4. Practice good hygiene - wash hands and face and shower frequently
  5. Those in high-risk groups such as asthmatics, those with respiratory problems, the elderly and children should avoid the outdoors
  6. See a doctor if you experience breathing difficulties, fever, nausea, dizziness, eye irritations or cough
  7. Stop smoking
  8. Turn the air-conditioner on while in vehicle and keep the windows shut
  9. Keep abreat of the latest information on the haze through the media

Look out for further updates on the fire and smoke haze situation.
