Tropical peatlands are facing tremendous pressure from exploitation due to population growth. Forest, land and aquatic resources extraction has been accelerated in the last ten years causing extensive degradation before their environmental services are recognized.

The main issues to explore the lost opportunity when peatlands and peatforest are developed including environmental services biodiversity values, peatland roles in regulating water regime, and carbon stored in the peat. The services provided by peatland ecosystem are usually not recognized, especially by local stakeholders. There is no local market from which local stakeholders could benefit.

This paper intends to explore national and mainly international markets where biodiversity conservation and global climate protection may be valued. Mechanisms are yet to be developed in connection with multilateral environmental agreements while continue to promote bilateral path
