Review of Regional Haze Situation in ASEAN Region for June 2021
In June 2021, Southwest Monsoon condition sets in over the ASEAN region. Increased shower activities and low hotspot count were observed over the northern ASEAN region.
On the other hand, dry conditions with less rainfall were observed in the Southern ASEAN region. Slight increase in hotspot activity was observed over Sumatera but no significant haze detected.
Based on the surveillance by the NOAA-20, 1,023 hotspots with high confidence level were detected in ASEAN region in June 2021. Eighty-two percent or 839 of the hotspots were detected in the northern ASEAN region. The hotspot count was higher than the previous years in the same review period. La Niña conditions are in neutral condition.

The UN's World Meteorological Organization said that La Nina phenomenon which has a temporary global cooling effect ended in May. Warmer temperature would follow in the northern hemisphere.

Second World Peatlands Day
|
|
The Second World Peatland Day was celebrated worldwide on 2nd June 2021. The event was launched by the International Peatland Society (IPS) in autumn 2019, to raise awareness of peat and peatlands worldwide. The event was celebrated online, via websites and social media - followed by local seminars, workshops and similar events.

To celebrate World Environment and World Oceans Day, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Indonesia in collaboration with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Indonesia organised a webinar entitled "Our Forest, Peatlands and Seas" on 8 June 2021.

Training for Researchers by Researchers
The Global Peatlands Initiative’s Research Working Group is organising a series of online training sessions for peatland researchers. The series kicked off in December 2020 and will carry on through to 2022. In June 2021, two trainings were organised.

Philippines' Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) hosted the sixth ASEAN Task Force on Peatlands (ATFP) meeting and third Programme Steering Committee (PSC) meetings of ASEAN Peatland Programmes and Projects from 28 to 30 June 2021.

Pre-COP of the UN Climate Change Conference
The Pre-Conference of the Parties (Pre-COP) will be held in Milan on 30 September – 2 October 2021. The Conference will be attended by 35 to 40 countries, representatives of the UNFCCC Secretariat, the chairs of the Subsidiary Bodies of the Convention and a number of stakeholders who play a key role in the fight against climate change or in the transition to sustainable development.

U.N. opens registration for climate conference with UK vaccine offer
The UK will host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow on 31 October – 12 November 2021. Registration is now open but the format is yet to be determined. The UK government is making every effort to enable in-person participation

Peatlands worldwide are drying out, threatening to release 860 million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year
To study the net impact of peat drying, an international team of scientists collected and analysed a large dataset from carefully designed and controlled experiments across 130 peatlands all over the world. The study suggests, if no sustainable measures are being taken, 860 million tonnes of carbon dioxide could be released every year by around 2100.

International Peatland Society (IPS) organised a webinar entitled “Peatland Restoration worldwide – where do we stand in 2021?” on 14 June 2021. The webinar featured international experts presenting their views on the status of peatland restoration in 10 of the IPS member countries.

Bambang Setiadi new Vice Chair for IPS Environment Commission + New Volunteeers
Dr Bambang Setiadi from Indonesia has been appointed as the new Vice Chair of the International Peatland Society (IPS) Commission on Peatlands and Environment.
In addition, the IPS is still looking for volunteers for the following positions:
- Coordinator for the Expert Group on "Peat for Growing Media"
- Two Vice Chairs for the Commission "Peatlands and Economy"
- Coordinator for the "Peatlands and people, health and local livelihoods" Expert Group.

EU's Borrell: Palm oil issue shouldn't hamper trade talks with Indonesia
Due to EU's restrictions on palm oil, an Indonesian official has threatened to review the trade negotiation to make sure palm oil is positioned fairly in the planned deal. EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell said the issue should not jeopardize cooperation with Indonesia and both should look for solutions.

EU palm oil use for biodiesel to fall in 2021 on cost concerns: USDA
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) revealed the EU use of palm oil to make biodiesel is forecast to decline in the 2021 due to expected lower production of Hydrogenation-Derived Renewable Diesel, popularly known as HDRD, from Spain.
